‘I can’t believe this is plant based’! It’s an exciting time to be a foodie with the food revolution we are witnessing. This week we spoke to Ann Lee from VeganBurg on what veganism is, how they are redefining plant-based cuisine to make it fun and why it matters.
Ann was a vegetarian for about four years before making the switch to vegan. Initially due to health reasons with her family and soon everything else fell under that umbrella. Going vegan for her was choosing to live while making the least amount of harm to all beings—to the environment, to the animals. And if you are wondering what differs a vegetarian from a vegan – ‘basically, it’s vegetarianism but without milk, no cheese, no dairy, no form of animal products’. Vegetarians with an edge!
“I think that the Millennials, at the end of the day, are the key drivers of
a sustainable movement. ”                                               – Ann Lee
VeganBurg first opened in San Francisco in 2010 right at Haight-Ashbury, often referred to as the home of the vegan movement, before opening its second home in Singapore. Alex, the founder of VeganBurg, shared that in the beginning, it was largely vegans and vegetarians eating at their restaurant. Now, about sixty to seventy percent are meat eaters and thirty percent vegans and vegetarians. So they are really starting to see a shift in people making more conscious decisions about their food consumption patterns.
In this interview with Ann, we speak about:Â
- Her journey to veganism
- How VeganBurg has helped everyday consumers change the way they look at plant-based foods
- How they incorporate Singaporean culture and preferences into their plant-based menu
- And other environmental problems their tackling including the Haze
Try out Ann’s Little Green Steps:
- Try considering a vegan diet at least maybe once a week or twice a week. If veganism is too extreme start with vegetarian food.
- There are more and more restaurants that are opening up and giving more vegetarian plant-based options for everyone. Just give it a go.
- Educate yourself and have fun with your food.
