The Conscious Scoop: EU to Ban Single-Use Plastics & Pairing Chicken with Wine in Fashion

The EU parliament voted to ban single-use plastics by 2021 – that means 28 member states are going plastic-free. And also, micro-plastics can be found in our poop. Yes, we’re eating plastic. And have you ever thought of pairing chicken with your wine? It’s eco-friendly we promise.

Check out the latest news on sustainability that’s making headlines all around the world this week.

1. EU Parliament bans single-use plastics by 2021

While an ambitious directive, a commitment has been made using parliamentary measures to take transitional steps towards reducing their plastic waste from now until 2021. This means single-use items such as straws, plates, cutlery and cotton buds will be banned. Items that are not banned (but still plastic) with no existing alternative will have more time to reduce by 25% by 2025.

28 states going on a plastic-ban? An environmental dream come true.

2. Microplastics found in human poop, what does this mean?

It means that these plastics may be widespread in the human food chain. It’s suggested that more than 50% of the world population may have microplastic in their poop. But because plastic use is so pervasive in our lives, removing it from our lives and the food chain is going to be tough. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try.

You’re eating plastic, pal.

3. Pairing chicken with wine in fashion

The food industry produces a lot of waste, and people are turning this waste into usable items. Genius! With vast amounts of feather waste as well as skins and seeds of grape being produced every year, they can actually get turned into valuable green raw materials.

4. Make it onto Santa’s nice-list by helping people go eco-friendly

Christmas is near, and with increased eco-awareness, expect maybe a travel mug or two this season. With an increasing focus on sustainability, it’s going to be at the front of many shoppers’ minds.
