Andy Li, Founder Missing Link Project Series

Launched the “Missing Link” project series, starting with a polyfoam recycling scheme aimed at addressing Hong Kong’s plastic recycling challenges.

Andy Li holds a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Hazards from the University of Portsmouth (2009) and an MSc (Eng) in Sustainable Waste Management from the University of Leeds (2010). With over 12 years of experience in waste management and recycling, Andy has worked across various sectors, including academic research, consultancy, public engagement, and frontline operations.

In 2016, he launched the “Missing Link” project series, starting with a polyfoam recycling scheme aimed at addressing Hong Kong’s plastic recycling challenges. The project identifies gaps in the recycling process and develops strategies to tackle social and environmental issues. Andy emphasizes that recycling requires action, not just discussion, and aims to educate stakeholders on sustainable waste practices to foster a mindset shift toward environmental responsibility.

By expanding recycling channels and integrating end markets for plastics and polyfoam, the initiative seeks to minimize waste, prolong landfill lifespans, and encourage stakeholders to engage in CSR and ESG efforts. Throughout the project’s history, they’ve faced challenges, such as massive sea trash clearance after super typhoons Hato (2017) and Mangkhut (2018), as well as overwhelming polyfoam waste during COVID-19 and Chinese New Year.

The project has received continuous support from the Environment and Conservation Fund (ECF) and operates under the Hong Kong Association of Youth Development (Tsuen Wan District Branch). Currently, Andy’s 230m² workshop processes a wide range of materials, including polyfoam types EPE, EPP, EPS, and general plastics like PET, HDPE, LDPE, PP, and PS.
