Would You Rent Clothes to Travel Lighter?

In an audacious move that is set to shake up the travel industry, Japan Airlines (JAL) has soared beyond conventional hospitality offerings by introducing a fashion-forward amenity that’s sure to leave passengers with an unforgettable impression. JAL’s latest stroke of genius lies not in plush seats or gourmet cuisine but in the realm of clothing rental.

The Fashion Conundrum

Let’s face it: the fashion industry has often been a double-edged sword. On one side, it fuels our desires for the latest trends and styles, tempting us with jaw-dropping discounts and disposable clothing. But on the other side, it leaves behind a trail of environmental destruction and unethical labour practices. It’s a classic case of “look good now, worry later.”

And have you ever experienced the frustration of going on a trip only to realise you’ve forgotten your favourite outfit? Or perhaps you’ve envied those fashionable travellers gliding through their holidays with impeccable style? Well, fret no more, for JAL’s latest initiative, dubbed “Any-Wear, Anywhere,” is here to save the day! This ingenious clothing rental service is sure to make your travels more convenient, chic, and, arguably most importantly, sustainable.

The airline has announced a special programme called “Any Wear, Anywhere” that will run for a year until August 31, 2024. Under this initiative, passengers travelling on JAL-operated flights will have the option to rent a set of clothes during their stay in the country.

The new initiative might bring a revelation to checked baggage enthusiasts, but its main objective goes beyond individual traveller convenience. The primary focus of the clothing rental service is to lighten the aircraft weight in the JAL fleet, leading to a reduction in the airline’s carbon emissions

Compromise is (no longer) the key

We’ve all been there: a last-minute business trip or a spontaneous vacation, and we’re left staring blankly at our overstuffed suitcase, wondering if it’s humanly possible to fit anything else in there. Not only does this service save you from lugging around bulky luggage, but it also reduces the environmental impact of air travel. By encouraging passengers to rent instead of buying new clothes for every trip, airlines are contributing to a greener and more eco-friendly future. And did you also know that packing light can also lead to fuel savings for transportation, including planes and cars? The lighter the load, the less energy is required to transport it, resulting in lower carbon emissions. According to Any Wear, Anywhere and using the Tokyo-New York route, an estimated 7.5kg of CO2 emissions are reduced by 10 kg less baggage using the initiative.

It may sound like a random gimmick. Until you realise that this might actually be the future of fashion and travel all in one. They’re a practical and sustainable solution to an age-old problem. Run by Sumitomo Corporation, the initiative is currently in its one-year trial period from July 5, 2023, to August 31, 2024 (scheduled).

“With more and more people flying again after the COVID-19 pandemic, and with the recent emphasis in sustainability, there is a growing movement around the world to promote sustainable tourism. Travellers increasingly desire to make more sustainable choices… [but] they still lack sufficient options,” JAL wrote in a statement. “The concept of the Service is therefore to provide a travel experience with minimal luggage by offering clothing rentals at the destination, thereby creating environmental value.”

To secure clothing rentals, travellers need to complete an online registration process and provide their JAL reference number along with the address of their hotel or short-term rental accommodation. It is advisable to make the reservation at least a month in advance of their travel dates, and they can enjoy the clothing rental service for a duration of up to two weeks.

The rental prices range from ¥4,000 (38 SGD) to ¥7,000 (67 SGD), depending on the number of items you choose. The least expensive package includes three tops and two bottoms, while the most expensive option provides six tops and three bottoms. Additionally, the clothing categories are divided into summer, winter, and spring/fall, along with different occasions such as casual, smart casual, and a blend of both.

Sustainability is the New Black

On the other hand, why shouldn’t we just rent clothes in our everyday lives? Picture this: You know how your wardrobe looks like an out-of-control jungle of clothes? It’s like a never-ending episode of hypothetical “Fashion Wars,” and Mother Nature is not amused. But fear not, for there is a heroic solution that saves the day, the planet, and your style: renting clothes!

This isn’t really a “new” thing. Clothing rental services have been around for a while now. Companies like Rent The Runway (RTR) have been around since 2009 and are thriving more than ever. Although RTR only ships orders within the U.S., including Hawaii and Alaska, it’s a yay for local shipping!

Renting clothes means less “fast fashion” frenzy. You know, those cheap and trendy pieces that turn out to be one-hit wonders and end up in the landfill faster than you can say “fashion faux pas.” By renting, you become an eco-warrior, combating the vicious cycle of waste and overconsumption. In short, fewer clothes produced means less water wasted, fewer pesticides sprayed, and a whole lot less energy consumed. It’s like throwing a stylish garden party for the planet!

Renting clothes also breaks the chain of clothing hoarding. No more cramming your closet with pieces you’ll never wear again. Think of it as a fashion revolution—liberating your space and your mind while saying goodbye to those guilt-inducing tags.

Yes, we’re aware that clothing rental still has a long way to go in many aspects. From a variety of options and sizes to even cultural and social factors and sustainability challenges, having the option to rent clothes is still a step ahead of purchasing from unsustainable brands. Brands like Rentadella and Love, Fioyo are just some of the options for clothing rental places in Singapore.

So, next time you’re tempted to splurge on yet another outfit, remember: renting clothes is the ultimate power move for the planet and your wardrobe. It’s sustainable, savvy, and oh-so-stylish.
