The airline has announced a special programme called “Any Wear, Anywhere” that will run for a year until August 31, 2024. Under this initiative, passengers travelling on JAL-operated flights will have the option to rent a set of clothes during their stay in the country.
The new initiative might bring a revelation to checked baggage enthusiasts, but its main objective goes beyond individual traveller convenience. The primary focus of the clothing rental service is to lighten the aircraft weight in the JAL fleet, leading to a reduction in the airline’s carbon emissions
Compromise is (no longer) the key

Not only does this service save you from lugging around bulky luggage, but it also reduces the environmental impact of air travel. By encouraging passengers to rent instead of buying new clothes for every trip, airlines are contributing to a greener and more eco-friendly future. And did you also know that packing light can also lead to fuel savings for transportation, including planes and cars? The lighter the load, the less energy is required to transport it, resulting in lower carbon emissions. According to Any Wear, Anywhere and using the Tokyo-New York route, an estimated 7.5kg of CO2 emissions are reduced by 10 kg less baggage using the initiative.
It may sound like a random gimmick. Until you realise that this might actually be the future of fashion and travel all in one. They’re a practical and sustainable solution to an age-old problem. Run by Sumitomo Corporation, the initiative is currently in its one-year trial period from July 5, 2023, to August 31, 2024 (scheduled).
“With more and more people flying again after the COVID-19 pandemic, and with the recent emphasis in sustainability, there is a growing movement around the world to promote sustainable tourism. Travellers increasingly desire to make more sustainable choices… [but] they still lack sufficient options,” JAL wrote in a statement. “The concept of the Service is therefore to provide a travel experience with minimal luggage by offering clothing rentals at the destination, thereby creating environmental value.”
To secure clothing rentals, travellers need to complete an online registration process and provide their JAL reference number along with the address of their hotel or short-term rental accommodation. It is advisable to make the reservation at least a month in advance of their travel dates, and they can enjoy the clothing rental service for a duration of up to two weeks.
The rental prices range from ¥4,000 (38 SGD) to ¥7,000 (67 SGD), depending on the number of items you choose. The least expensive package includes three tops and two bottoms, while the most expensive option provides six tops and three bottoms. Additionally, the clothing categories are divided into summer, winter, and spring/fall, along with different occasions such as casual, smart casual, and a blend of both.
