Garden Beats is Turning up the Dial on Sustainability by #MakingGreenMoves

Singapore’s beloved Garden Beats music and picnic festival is #MakingGreenMoves in a big, big way this year with a series of sustainable steps for both the festival and you.

Everyone loves a music festival. What we don’t love are the cringe-worthy piles of rubbish left behind, the copious amounts of energy that the bedazzled stages take to power, and the menus heavily dependent on animal products. Then consider how hugely compounded this is when attendance reaches the tens of thousands because at that point you have yourself an environmental crisis. And so, the race to produce the most sustainable festival is on – and we’re totally ok with that.

Singaporean music and picnic festival Garden Beats has taken serious action this year on their plight towards making a meaningful green impact and the results show that they’re not just talkin’ the talk but also walkin’ the walk. And we are thrilled to be their Official Green Partner, helping them take green steps closer to their goal of being a sustainable music festival.

Not so #LittleGreenSteps

Perhaps most impressive is that Garden Beats will once again be a carbon neutral event thanks to ES Power, an electricity retailer that provides 100% carbon-neutral energy for businesses and homes. Garden Beats is the first and only festival in Singapore that can brag about this.

Festivalgoers will be drinking from super chic reusable cups made by Revolv, a rental service that helps reduce single-use plastic. The cups are made from stainless steel and come together with an upcycled cup holder. And to sweeten the deal, the festival will knock $1 off every drink when using these cups.

Vegetarian and vegan food options will be in abundance as will ample recycling bins and you can also expect to see creative pieces made from upcycled materials decorating the site. Water at the bar will come in eco-friendly Tetra packaging filled with Footprints Alkaline Water and thanks to PUB, water stations pouring NEWater will be scattered around the site so festivalgoers can fill up their reusable water bottles for free (as water should always be).

#MakingGreenMoves

But going green isn’t just up to the festival, it’s the responsibility of the festivalgoers as well. #MakeGreenMoves are all about things you can do too. Here are 6 things you can do that we encourage doing every day, not just at the festival:

1. BYO

Bring your own reusable water bottle or rent a Garden Beats cup and save $1 on each drink purchased. Water points can easily be found around the festival grounds and are absolutely free.

2. Pack Smart

Bring the essentials. Pack light and pack smart, bring only what you need. Shades, tickets and good vibes only.

3. Bye Bye Plastic

Bring your own bags. Garden Beats is banning single-use plastics on festival fields as plastic is not biodegradable and harmful to the environment.

4. Don’t Be Trashy

Properly dispose of your waste in the correct bins by separating food waste, garbage, and recycling. Help us keep the grounds clean and clean up after yourself.

5. Lighten The Load

Transport is a big part of the footprint for a festival. Think about how you are getting to and from – rideshare with friends, bike, take public transport or walk.

6. Live More Consciously

Visit the Conscious Fields to learn more about how you could do your part to help the environment.

Here are five more ways you can #MakeGreenMoves at Garden Beats festival:

Talk About Change…

And last but not least, Garden Beats is partnering with yours truly to deliver a series of thought-provoking talks. Head to the Conscious Fields for discussions with our Green Warriors on how to eat and make a difference at the same time, how to be both fashionable and sustainable, and the journey to becoming zero-waste and plastic-free.

Join Rebecca Cappelli from Let Us Be Heroes, Vikas Garg from abillionVeg, Katherine Braha from Saladstop and Laura Kantor from foodpanda at 2pm for musings about conscious eating and why you should join the plant-based revolution. At 3pm, meet with Laura Francois of Fashion Revolution, Raye Padit from The Fashion Pulpit and Connected Threads Asia, Xin Yi who heads H&M’s sustainability sector and Devonne Niam from Matter who will lead conversations on sustainable fashion. And finally at 4pm, Green is the New Black‘s leading lady Stephanie Dickson will speak alongside Jess Ong of Zero Waste SG and Kim Stengert from WWF, Guillemette de Chammard from Club Med on turning the tides on the negative impact of plastic.

Garden Beats takes place on March 9th 2019 and tickets can still be purchased here

Green Is The New Black is thrilled to be the Official Green Partner with Garden Beats for 2019.

Olivia Wycech: Olivia is a bon vivant with an insatiable appetite for...everything. Upon being horrified at the amount of rubbish she produced in a single day, her journey towards finding a better balance between being extravagant yet sustainable began. Like most obsessions, down the rabbit hole she went and it wasn’t long before she decided to shift her sustainable preachings from Friday nights after too much wine to every day at Green Is The New Black. Olivia is still trying to figure all this ‘the end of the world’ stuff out, so she is keepin’ it real, one super small #LittleGreenStep at a time. Be like Olivia.
