The Conscious Scoop: Bali Restaurant’s Interesting Zero-Waste Take & Algae Curtains Could Clean Your Air

Tis’ the season to be GREEN (and a little sparkly). If you haven’t noticed, our 12 Days of Conscious Christmas is up and running where you can check out amazing tips on how to do your part for the Earth this Christmas. But before you get too carried away, check out the latest sustainability news all over the world this week!

1. Bali restaurant takes a zero-waste approach to food, furniture and more!

This restaurant’s furniture is made from foam offcuts and sustainable wood, floor from chipped drinking glasses/plates and cement and a menu that serves line-caught fish. They also handle food waste by separating them into 5 different bins that then get used in many different ways (yes, not a one-size-fits-all food waste approach!). A customized approach to waste, Ijen restaurant is serving up green amazingness!

Go zero-waste with Ijen restaurant.

2. Looking for eco-friendly hotels? Here are some tips on what to look out for.

How do you know if your hotel is eco-friendly? Hotels everywhere are trying to do their part for the environment. In Singapore, we have PARKROYAL on Pickering whose iconic green image is one to check out for sure. For the eco-traveller, an eco hotel is one you would be willing to spend hundreds of dollars on. So if you’re hoping to reduce your impact on the Earth on your next trip, check out this article for some advice to consider!

Going green is as important as free wifi.

3. Plentyfull serving up goodness with ‘ugly’ food

Do your part to reduce food wastage by visiting Plentyfull restaurant at Millenia Walk! These dishes are craeted using ingredients from The Food Bank Singapore, an organisation that redistributes food donations to the needy. This means that the chef would have to be crazy creative, using whatever the Food Bank has to offer.

Ugly food’s got an amazing facelift.

4. Algae curtains could solve the pollution problem in cities

These walls could help absorb the carbon dioxide from the air while pumping out oxygen. Air pollution is a major problem in many cities. However, research has shown that microalgae have properties that allow them to re-metabolize some waste the city generates.

Think of it as the lungs of the city.

5. Keeping up with COP 24

The heat is on this COP24, what with the urgency for climate action. International climate negotiations have never been the easiest, as countries fight hard to protect their own national interests. However, we need cooperation now more than ever. They’re not the only ones who can do something about the Earth, though- You can do your part to fix the mess we’ve made (especially this festive season!), too.

As UN Sec-Gen, António Guterres, said “We cannot fail in Katowice.”

She’s currently an undergraduate who’s hungry for an exciting adventure - or mostly just hungry. She hopes that by the time she graduates, she can help herself and her community leave green footsteps on this Earth we call home.
