Melati Wijsen | Founder & Changemaker, Bye Bye Plastic Bags & YOUTHTOPIA

Ridding the world of plastic one bag at a time

For ending the plastic problem in Bali and youth empowerment

Melati Wijsen is an 18-year-old Indonesian/Dutch activist and changemaker. She graduated from Bali’s super cool Green School in 2017, one year early, and has been a full-time changemaker ever since. Actually, she’s been a sustainable mover and shaker since the age of 12 when she founded Bye Bye Plastic Bags with her younger sister Isabel, then 10. Together they’ve been leading the movement driven by youth since. In June of 2019, an official ban of plastic bags, straws and styrofoam was enforced by the Balinese government which is not only but also thanks to Bye Bye Plastic Bags’ campaigning for the past six years. This campaign of saying to no plastic bags ultimately lead to the first Indonesian province to make the ban.

Olivia Wycech: Olivia is a bon vivant with an insatiable appetite for...everything. Upon being horrified at the amount of rubbish she produced in a single day, her journey towards finding a better balance between being extravagant yet sustainable began. Like most obsessions, down the rabbit hole she went and it wasn’t long before she decided to shift her sustainable preachings from Friday nights after too much wine to every day at Green Is The New Black. Olivia is still trying to figure all this ‘the end of the world’ stuff out, so she is keepin’ it real, one super small #LittleGreenStep at a time. Be like Olivia.
