Green Common arrives in Singapore: a Plant-based Retail and Culinary Destination

It’s getting easier and more exciting to be vegan in Singapore. Green Monday, the award-winning social venture, has launched Singapore’s first Green Common – a one-stop destination for plant-based retail and sustainable dining. From localised dishes to plant-based snacks and frozen meats, it’s easy to enjoy this unique concept store.

David Yeung, Founder and CEO of the Green Monday Group, has always bee ahead of the curve. He’s been on the mission to “Make Change Happen, Make Green Common” since 2012. And made a lot of noise in Hong Kong, and around Asia when he was the first to serve the ‘bleeding plant-based meat burger’ that was Beyond Meat in 2017.

The Green Monday ‘once-a-week plant-based’ philosophy and has reached a global audience, spreading to over 30 countries. And whole cities like Berkeley in the US have also declared going green on Mondays. The venture arm of the group includes Green Common, a unique plant-based retail and restaurant concept store, and OmniFoods, a food-tech company currently producing plant-based pork meat.

David Yeung, about the new store opening in Singapore, shares, “Over the years we have seen great interest from Singaporeans looking to have access to more plant-based alternatives. We are so excited to be launching the first Green Common concept in Southeast Asia here, bringing our signature retail and dine-in concepts to the city. Our one-stop-shop is designed to make it easy to go green and make thoughtful (and delicious) lifestyle choices.”

The Singapore store is the eleventh in the world after locations in Hong Kong and Shanghai. The store is bright, inviting, exudes warmth and a touch of playfulness. It is a 3,000 square-foot eatery and grocery store at VivoCity, which is helping to bring a wider variety of vegan products and dishes to our city-state. You can expect to find plant-based heavyweight brands Beyond Meat (sausages), Daiya (cheese), JUST (egg),  Heura (chicken) and of course OmniMeat (pork) – as ready-made meals, frozen ingredients and dishes on the cafe menu.

Chef Louie of Green Common Singapore shared that every single ingredient used in all of their dishes are plant-based. No easy feat in Singapore where ingredients are hard to come by. The menu is packed full of local flavour and here are a few of our top recommendations:

> Hainanese Trick’en Rice – a recreation of local hawker favourite with Heura chicken (the texture and taste are excellent!)

> Meatless Meatballs –  hand-rolled made with OmniMeat and Beyond Meat in a rich marinara sauce

> Omni Musubi – crispy OmniMeat Luncheon with a  glaze  of teriyaki sauce on top of sushi rice, wrapped together with Nori

> Papaya & Mango Unlimeat Salad – if you are craving that Thai flavouring don’t miss this dish, with Unlimeat vegan beef alternative

> Hong Kong Style French Toast – end your meal with a crunchy sweet treat

And just in case you were sitting on the fence – here are a few stats that may sway you if you ate plant-based for a year: a CO2 reduction equivalent to 7 months of driving, 477 animal lives saved, enough food saved for 17 people, and drinking water considered to nourish 805 people (Source: Environmental Working Group via Green Monday).
