1. Singapore’s largest floating offshore solar panel system to be built soon
Singapore’s upping their own sustainability game with a plan to build almost 5 hectares of floating solar panels along the Straits of Johor, to be fully operational by 2019. The platform will be able to generate about 6,388 MWh of renewable energy annually and will create a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of about 2,600 tonnes every year.
2. Elephants are evolving to lose their tusks
Poaching isn’t just a shitty thing to do to elephants in general- it’s also causing them to modify their genetics entirely. Researchers are beginning to see the emergence of tuskless elephants, and are seeing a reduction in tusk size in general in areas where elephants are heavily poached.
The elephants are outsmarting us – one tusk at a time.Â
3. China has postponed allowing Tiger bone and Rhino horn trading
After much condemnation from conservation groups, China is rethinking its decision to overturn the ban. Wildlife Conservation groups are now hopeful and continuing to pressure China to ban the trade of such products entirely.
A small step for China, but a giant step for Tigers and Rhino-kind.
4. Growing leather without animalsÂ
A futuristic ideal? Not quite. Biofabrication plants are springing and gearing up to get more of their products on the market. Could cultured leather could just be the breakthrough we need for a more sustainable future?
